General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) CEO Richard Wagoner earned $10.2 million in 2006, and will be receiving a raise in his $1.28 million salary, which was cut in half in February of 2006. While the $370,000 salary raise he's receiving is a pittance in the grand scheme of things for a company like GM, it does have important symbolic value.
This coming July, GM will begin negotiations for a new contract with the United Auto Workers Union. Here's the problem: Given the sacrifices that the workers have made over the past few years, how can anyone argue that they shouldn't receive a portion of what they gave up, just as Wagoner received 50% of his salary cut back for this year?
This looks remarkable short-sighted for Wagoner and the Board. Is the $370,000 raise (he earned $10.2 million including options and restricted stock in 2006) really worth the headache of hearing about during every negotiating session?

I used to own all GM products. I still have a Silverado, and my work van is an express 2500. This Ceo's inflated salary, and the UAW costly labor expense to the auto maker, is exactly why my other vehilcle, a toyota, has taken over as largest manufacturer in the world. I don't blame anyone for trying to earn what they can, but face it look what "we" pay because they pay someone 20+ an hour to put four bolts in. It is the Gov and big business that is selling out our Great country.

This is an example of how not to be a leader. Given GM's abysmal performance, Waggoner should make sacrifices greater than his employees. That would be the act of a great leader.
Leadership is not something you can teach. It is intrinsic. Waggoner should take his package and be gone. He doesn't understand how to build cars, so who needs him? Clearly not GM. Perhaps Toyota needs his executive talent?

His income rate is not out of line with other companies with this asset level. I am a share holder and I feel he has done a good job in 2006/2007. He did not make the problems but he is solving some of them. GM is much beter off today than they were 3 years ago. GM will turn a good profit in the next 5 years. Their cars are better than most people give them credit. I just turned back a 4 month old Lexus (They took it back) as it was a piece of junk. I have a four year old Escalade and it is wonderful. Your might want to think about buying a few shares of gm stock.

What sacrifices are you talking about ? UAW making sacrifices and concessoins? That is bull!! UAW is returning what wsa never theirs!! I am still expecting UAW to give a lot more back during negotations this summer. No more dog and pony shows! You readers should know that management did a top notch job for UAW because management ripped $30 billion from sharehodlers in cut dividends since 1989 when $5 divdiends was last paid. It was always $2,3, or $1 since then.. Kirk came in and cut our dividends in half again to $1. GM stock is way down depressed back to 1929 or worse when the famous stock market crash occured. GM is really depressed stock way down at the end of the bungee rope, still falling and probably hit the rocks at the bottom if the rope is a tad too long. Who knows.. UAW thought they could still talk tough even today. No,no,no, please UAW You are way in over your heads, fools!! Nobody is helping you. Please do not discuss the executive pay now. Everything is riding on you UAW!!!! It is you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, UAW workers who have to decide how to save GM and shareholders. If you dont, it is bye bye time. No apologies about that, buddy..Nobody is caring about you as you can see in GM stock prices today. NObody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, .... You talk tough, you will buiild a lot less cars and trucks like pronto!! There is no outs for you . You are stuck in your own corner .... You will have to wait for the paint to dry out before you can come forward. Everyone is watching you, UAW workers. I had told everyone everything about you UAW and your management follies... Time is up and you gotta change your sex now!!

The reason why GM is going down the wrong path is that they have stopped making opulent, comfortable cars. I have done a lot of research on this. Have been GM customer since 1949.used Pontiacs, Buicks. Oldsmobiles.Being a salesman on the road I used to drive 50,000 miles per yr-using Oldsmobile Delta Royale sedan. This car was the most popular family car in 1985.But, in 1986- the car was shortened and worst of all- the content of back and seat was cut in half. I went to trade in the 1985-sat in car-most uncomfortable! I walked out, disgusted. I settled on a Honda. GM had taken their line and did this to all their cars. At the moment- I own 4 Cadillac Sedan Devilles-1992,1993. The 1993 is the last comfortable Deville that Cadillac has built.
The only way GM can turn it self around- and bring back their old customers is to recognize that the American Middle Class bought their cars for opulence and COMFORT! Remember the styles- BROUGHAM, ROYALE, FLEETWOOD D'ELEGANCE-Bring them back as they use to be with no changes!
BOB LUTZ, and RICK WAGGONE are the wrong guys to run the show.
